The number of students enrolled in radiologic technology programs decreased for the second straight year, according to the 2009 Enrollment Snapshot of Radiography, Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine Programs conducted by the ASRT.
Survey results indicated that first-year enrollment numbers for fall 2009 were 16,759 for radiography students, 1,505 for radiation therapy students and 1,482 for nuclear medicine technology students. These figures represent a 1.9 percent decrease for radiography programs, a 0.5 percent decrease for radiation therapy programs and a 15 percent decrease for nuclear medicine technology programs when compared with 2008 enrollment numbers.
However, interest in the profession still remains high. For fall 2009, 56 percent of program directors reported full enrollment compared with 61.4 percent in 2008. Directors managing fully enrolled programs reported turning away about 20,729 qualified students, while programs not at full enrollment reported unused capacity totaling only 1,747 students.
About 9.6 percent of radiography program directors indicated that they plan to decrease enrollment numbers, while 8 percent reported they were going to admit additional students. Nearly 16.7 percent of radiation therapy program directors plan to decrease enrollment figures, compared with 3.3 percent who plan to increase student enrollment.
