X-rays move to next stage

A Cardiff University scientist has developed imaging software which may revolutionise the way X-rays are used.

The software, developed by Professor Hechmi Toumi at the university’s School of Biosciences, enhances the X-ray image of knee cartilage and other non-bony structures, uncovering early signs of cartilage damage, degeneration and osteoarthritis.

The development of the Degenerative Knee Indicator aims to increase the ability of surgeons, radiologists, physiotherapists and GPs to diagnose patients with knee damage and arthritis, without having to revert to more expensive MRI scans.
